Event: Archives of An Undivided Past

And we’re back with a new series of events!
Building on Subcontinent Divided, the programme of UAL events focussed around the 75th anniversary of Indian independence, we are now issuing an open call to students and staff across UAL to participate in a follow-up project, Subcontinent Undivided: The Archive.
This strand of programme looks ahead to the 80th anniversary of Subcontinental Partition and partial Independence in 2027. We are working to create an archive that documents the histories and cultures of the undivided South Asian subcontinent and its unbreakable cultural bonds — including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tibet and India.
By Summer 2026, we aim to build a UAL archive that is rich in knowledge and content on the South Asian subcontinent — to act an enduring resource to inspire students and staff in their academic and artistic practices. Contributions may take the form of self-organised and self-funded discussions, articles, interviews, literature, journals, or lived experiences, all of which will be added to the archive.
Our first session will be held on Monday 13th October, 17:30 – 19:30 at CSM Kings Cross.
This call is open to all, regardless of heritage or connection to the subcontinent; to reserve a place, please register here.
Events will take place in person at Central Saint Martins (CSM), supported by the UAL University-wide Academic Support team, and curated by the Subcontinent Divided working group.
