Subcontinent Divided: Bringing communities together
A critical reflection on Independence, 75 years on

For six months, starting in August 2022 to February 2023, the Subcontinent Divided steering group at University of the Arts London (UAL) are encouraging proposals addressing the 75 years since Independence in the Indian subcontinent, as well as border and diaspora communities.
The repercussions of Independence, partition and decolonisation continue to resonate within the immediate nations and through its diaspora across the globe. Between the weight of historic narrative and the tumult of contemporary politics affecting the futures of Bangladeshi, Indian, Pakistani and Sri Lankan peoples, Subcontinent Divided considers the shared connections between our communities, and intends to hold space for all voices.
The programme will platform and focus on an intense, sustained focus on the histories and cultures of art and design, performance, and communication practices. We intend to do this by talking, thinking, doing, making, and learning together over this period, with an emphasis on arts pedagogical and educational practices.

We are making an open call for engagement within and connected to the University of the Arts London, for self-organised and self-funded participatory events. These could include:

  • Showcasing and discussing art, architecture, film, fashion, music, sound, design techniques and products, including your own research…
  • Debates on partition, colonialism, postcolonialism, decolonisation, diasporas, migration, politics, and development…
  • Reflections and references to key articles, books, photography, plays, performance, ecology, archival, object and cultural explorations…
  • In-person or virtual tours of museums, places, and spaces…

    The list is endless.

Participants and contributors need not claim any origin or heritage from the subcontinent; this call for proposals is open to all. Events may be held in person or online. The UAL University-wide Academic Support team will provide a platform for hosting and promoting events.
Please contact Sukie Sagoo-Reddy to take part by emailing s.sagoo-reddy@arts.ac.uk or get in touch via UAL channels.
